ID203 - Domino 8 Directories
Sat in the Domino * Directories session. They talked about the new features in the Domino 8 and 8.5 timeline. The most interesting is the future of using LDAP directories to store Domino user and groups data instead of the Domino directory. This basically is the next step in the centralized/de-centralized directory configurations that started back in Domino 6, just taken to the next step. The idea is that LDAP users can be "promoted" or "demoted" from being a Domino user - instead of Domino creating/deleting users. This adds the proper attributes to make them a Notes user. It's intended that this process will use the same types of actions as registering/deleting Notes users today.
At the end, a question came up about mobile directories. It seems that this is an area where work is still needed. Basically, instead of having all Domino directories as config directories, one directory would need to be kept to sync between the LDAP and Domino directories to create the MDC. It didn't appear that this was going to be fixed in 8.5 - the comment was you may be syncing directories "for years". Yikes
